Worm Farms
Help Needed for Center Lake:
On Monday, June 10th Forest View will be heading to Center Lake for our Annual Field Trip. I am looking for volunteers who would be willing to ride the bus or meet our class there and spend the day with us. Let me know if you would like to do this!
Math:
We are working on subtraction! Students should be able to fluently (without using their fingers) subtract to 5. They should confidently be able to subtract with in 10. This week we spent some time talking about subtracting 0 and then taking away 1 and what that means. We do a lot of practice with story problems and manipulative and then work into using equations and being confident with the minus sign.
Literacy & Science:
We started a new unit this week about Taking Care of the Earth. This domain will introduce students to the importance of being environmentally aware individuals. Students will learn that the best way to conserve Earth’s natural resources is to practice the three Rs of conservation—reduce, reuse, and recycle. By studying conservation, students will become familiar with the earth’s natural resources and will begin to recognize how people’s actions affect the environment in which we live.
Our science station has turned into recycling station. Students have to take the trash and put it into the right bin. We are also measuring how much trash weighs and peeling old crayons to melt down into new crayons.
We also using recycled 2 liter bottles to make worm farms. This was the perfect week to find worms outside after the rain. Students helped me collect worms and we put them into our soil habitats. we are adding nutrition with our breakfast fruit scraps and giving them water. We put paper over the bottles during much of the day. When we take the paper off, we can see the worm burrows. We learned this week that worms are very important to our soil. They help turn the soil for our garden.
Social Studies:
We are still working on our unit of study about Maps. This week we talked about how we live in the United States of America (USA) and where that is located on Earth. They remember North America from our Columbus study. Students were given a great map of the US to keep!
ACES:
On Wednesday we participated in A.C.E.S. This is a Michigan Fitness Foundation Program. Read about it here. The weather did not cooperate for us all to go outside on Wed. so we were able to participate in some cardio drumming. Such a great release and workout for our students!
Amy Hutton Triathlon:
Today each student at F.V. is bringing home our traditional fundraising explanation. This year we are doing a Triathlon! Amy was a former teacher who had a positive impact on many Forest View students. The proceeds will help fund the Amy Hutton Scholarship for former F.V. students and books to build classroom libraries. This will take the place of the Color Run we have done in the past.
Your child is bringing home a form that looks like this today to raise donations and possibly earn some cool prizes! If you would like to make an online donation here.
Congratulations to Alana for being our STAR student this week! Alana is a hard worker, a kind friend, and the best complimenter! She always has something nice to say!
We also had a few friends join the 100's Club this week for counting to 100 by 1's! Yay!
And lastly, Congratulations to our Second (Hayden) and Third place (Colton) Arbor Day Drawing winners! Our class swept the drawing category for Kindergarten in Cadillac! Pretty awesome!
Have a great weekend! And if you have any fun sports going on next week that maybe Jack, Ellie and I can come watch, please let me know when! We hear a lot about soccer at share time, but I am not always sure of what time!
