Going Back in Time

More and More rain. It makes it difficult to not go outside, so we are pulling out all the games and Cosmic Yoga for indoor recess. We just can't wait for nice weather and to get rid of all this snow gear! The playground is really muddy right now.

Math:

This week we discussed different strategies to help with addition. Lots and lots of practice will help us become more fluent with adding. Students do not need to use all these strategies or any of them, but one might work better than another for each student, so we practice with them all.

One of the strategies being using fingers to add. Please note that researchers show students using their fingers to add is not a disservice, but a way for them to quickly obtain a concrete object to assist in solving. We will also use our fingers as more of a counting on tool. I teach students to hold that larger number in their head and then count on, possibly using fingers if needed. You will also see the use of a number path verses a number line. Researchers also believe that a number line is just too abstract for our young mathematicians. Students need to be able to visually see each unit.

Next Week we will start with subtraction.

Literacy:

This week we continued to learn about life in the 1700's Colonial Times. Our stories this week helped us learn about tradespeople like millers, bakers, carpenters, blacksmith's and cobblers. Students learned about the different tools these people used in their trades and why their jobs were so important to the town. We have been working in our covered wagons at school!

We would like to invite you to our Colonial Towns Square. Kindergarten will have some actors and actresses presenting different jobs from Colonial Times to help students better understand the things we have been learning. We are putting this together for the students, but would like to extend an invite to families if you would like to join your child for this fun hour.

Forest View would like to invite you to an annual fundraiser at Culvers. Monday! April 29th- Culvers Family Night (eat at Culvers and support FV) 5:00-8:00. A Forest View staff member will serve you!
