Get Your Pizza!
Back from Spring break! I loved hearing all the fun journeys, overnights, play dates, vacations, cousins, and water-park stories! The kids had so much to share Monday. My family had a quiet break, the flu hit our house and is still going, but we enjoyed the sunshine and bike rides. I was happy to see all the little faces and was greeted with many hugs.
We dug right in this week. Despite my house getting the flu! Yuk.
Our week started off with a visit from Haleigh Vaughn from 9&10 news. She heard we were studying weather and meteorology and wanted to come share with us. We even made the news! She was so excited to see our weather station in the dramatic play station and hopes to see many science majors in the future!
Here is a clip she sent me from the visit. Click and enjoy!
Phonics: Our phonics time consists of lots of reading. Practicing words and phrases in books that we are learning. It is fun to see all that word building practice in action. The look on a child's face when they successfully read on their own is the most amazing thing. This is my favorite time of year.
We are starting a new unit and you will see practice with double-letter spellings that most frequently occur after a short-vowel sound. (black, off, pick, small, tell, well, will)We also have two new tricky words: funny, and all.
Literacy: This week we learned about the Pilgrims and their trip from England to the "New World" where they landed at Plymouth Rock. There, the pilgrims met Squanto and the Wampanoag tribe. The Native Americans taught the pilgrims how to survive the harsh winters and how to hunt, fish and grow crops. We learned about the First Thanksgiving and although this was almost 500 years ago, we still celebrate Thanksgiving today with many of the same food items: like turkey and corn.
Today we compiled our "Corn Homework" and learned a lot about how corn is used today and things that have corn in them. Thank you to the many parents who donated corn products for our taste test!
Social Studies: Maps! As we are learning about Christopher Columbus and the Pilgrims I wanted to pair it with some study of maps. We are learning about what is a map, how is it use, and what features of a map help me to use it. We will also be creating a map book starting from our homes all the way to the continents.
Something Special Happening!
Math: We are working on addition and our facts to 10. Students are practicing in many different ways and getting comfortable with partners.Today the students arrived to a room transformation- a pizzeria! Mrs. Ouwinga's Pizzeria! We used some pizza boxes and the cut-outs for pizza toppings (thank you!) to have fun with our addition. Although our room won't stay a pizza shop, we will continue to use the boxes as objects for addition and subtraction.
We started a chart with strategies to help us with addition:
1- Use objects to combine groups and count.
Thank you! and look for pictures!
Have a warmer weekend! Enjoy the sunshine.
