The 4 Seasons

We did it! We had a full week of school! Although we did have a few days when we couldn't go outside for recess because of the temperature, it was nice to still be here every day.

Literacy and Science:

This week we spent time each day learning about the different seasons Michigan has to offer. We learned that the United States has 4 seasons, but the seasons may look different in Florida, then they do here in Michigan. We were introduced to a girl named Annie in Literacy. She is from Washington D.C. and was our pen pal for the week. She talked to us about what the different seasons were like where she lived. It was neat to see the seasons and compare with where we live.

Phonics:

We were introduced to digraphs. A consonant digraph is a set of two letters that, jointly, stand for one consonant sound. A consonant cluster is a set of two or more letters that stand for two or more consonant sounds. Here are some examples. The word clip begins with a consonant cluster; the letters ‘c’ and ‘l’ stand for two separate sounds. The word ship begins with a consonant sound written with a digraph. The letters ‘s’ and ‘h’ are working together as a digraph (or letter team) to stand for one sound.

This week we are learning about /ch/ as in chip, /sh/ as in ship and /th/ as in thumb. Students are reading, building, and writing these words and getting familiar with the digraph.

We also learned the tricky word "down". We wore band aides to represent the ow saying "ow".

Math:

This week we spent time comparing numbers 11-20. Students are working at understanding how to make the number with a. group of ten and some more and then comparing to say which is more, greater, less, fewer or the same and equal. These are the vocabulary words we use.

Thanks for the families who attended conferences this week. I was only able to meet with half my class, but if you would like to meet or talk on the phone, I would love that!

Remember, I am making book bags for any family would like books at their students level. It is exciting to see their reading taking off!

Congratulations to Addison for joining the 100 club counting by 1's.

Have a great weekend!
