We are Reading!

We have some exciting news! the students have reached our goal of 15 minutes doing read to self! This will be a rotation on our daily literacy station board. Students book shop for books to keep in their tub for the week and then during read to selftime, they get comfortable and get lost in their books!

We also took some time this week to learn about our job on the Ipads that is another center rotation. Every day we go to 4 stations and meet with Mrs. O in a small group.

You can see some pics of students working hard at Phonics.

Students were able to share Epic with you at conferences. It is a great app that reads books to students-both fiction and non-fiction. They can also choose books to look at.

Check it out here!

Language Arts: I am sure you have heard all about our fairy tales and folktales this week and have been retold stories in many different ways. The students really enjoyed the fiction stories and are learning all about the characters, setting, and plot of the stories.

A huge focus throughout the week was "The Plot". Students were taught to understand that each story has a beginning, middle and end. We used this chart a lot to help us with that process. We also used other visual tools to retell the story with the B.M.E.

This is a great tool to follow at home when reading fiction books and ask questions like:

Who were the characters?

What was the setting?

What was the problem in the story?

How did the problem get solved?

Phonics: Wow, our phonics time has really taken off. We have been introduced to 4 sounds now: m,t,d,a,o, c. With these sounds we are recognizing the lowercase form of sounds and using them to build words. We do not call them by their letter names yet. It is amazing how all that oral work on breaking words apart has helped us with this word reading.

mat, mad, ad, at, am, dad, tad, cat, mom

I did challenge the kids to go home and have you use those 6 letters to build any word and see if they could read it- I told them to "blow your mind!" I hope they did, or you try it together this weekend!

Math: We are been working on those numbers 6-10. Getting lots of counting and number writing practice in. We also are working on counting on. Using a group of 5 and then some more by saying 5, 6, 7 to show 7.

Science: We are learning about day and night and the moon. This week students told me what they already know about the moon and we are going to study and add or take away from our chart. If you are able, encourage your child to check out the moon at night for the next month.

Thank you to the parents who came and helped us carve pumpkins to finish our 5 senses unit. It was so much fun!

Also, thanks for sending in those Box Tops. A portion of the money that comes from our class Box Tops comes right back to our classroom. The PTO said there is a Box Top app that you can download and it will give our school additional points! Here is the link.

Congratulations to Eliza on being our "Star Student" of the week! She is such a kind friend and is always doing her best to be accountable and do her best Kindergarten work!

Enjoy your Fall weekend!

Tiffany
